Microdermabrasion

FAQ

What is it?

Microdermabrasion is a skin rejuvenation and resurfacing technique effective for removing the outermost layer of skin, leaving it feeling soft and looking more youthful.  The DiamondTomeWand™ removes these exterior dead, dry skin cells in a two-step process:  1) gentle exfoliation of the surface layer with natural diamond chips and 2) simultaneous vacuuming away of the skin cells in a controlled way.  Removing this outer layer of dead skin cells leaves the skin smoother and promotes the growth of healthy new tissue.  During this procedure, pores are unblocked and circulation is enhanced.  Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment with no "down-time"; your normal activities may be resumed immediately following the visit.

Resurfacing with the DiamondTomeWand™ is similar to other microdermabrasion techniques except there are no loose particles that may cause eye irritation and skin reaction. In addition, there are no loose abrasive materials that have potential to contaminate you or the environment.

Who Will Benefit From Microdermabrasion?

Individuals who will benefit from microdermabrasion are those who desire healthier, smoother, younger-looking skin.  Microdermabrasion is recommended for patients who desire skin improvements from the following:

What Will The Evaluation Involve?

During your first visit at Facial Surgery Center, you will complete several medical history forms, one specific to skin care and treatment.  Your doctor will perform a thorough examination of your skin.  The doctor will then speak to you at length about options for skin care treatments, procedures, and management.  You and your doctor will determine the skin care plan that is best for you.  At that point, you will meet with a qualified Facial Surgery Center staff member who will instruct you concerning your prescribed daily skin care regimen.  You will receive your first microdermabrasion if you so desire.

What Will Treatment Involve?

Prior to your microdermabrasion, it is optimal to remove contact lenses.  You must wash off all makeup.  The skin of the face and neck are treated during the procedure.  There is little or no discomfort.  It is important to plan to sit still and relax.  After your microdermabrasion is completed, cool compresses are applied, then one or two cosmetic products are put on the skin to hydrate and moisturize.  You can expect the face to feel "tingly" and slightly "tight".  It may feel like you have a mild "windburn"; this sensation is of short duration.  You may also expect some mild redness that usually resolves in minutes to one-to-two hours.  You may reapply makeup immediately.  Each session takes approximately 30 minutes, but you might expect the first one to take a little longer.  A treatment series may comprise of 4-10 sessions depending on your type of skin and the condition for which you are being treated.  The degree of effectiveness can be controlled by the coarseness of the DiamondTome Wands™ that range from fine to extra coarse and by the amount of suction applied in conjunction with the wand.  Your trained skin care professional, along with your physician, is able to determine the type of procedure to best meet your skin care goals while maintaining your comfort.  Microdermabrasions can be alternated with chemical peels for treatment of certain skin conditions.

What Does Post-Procedure Care Involve?

Following your microdermabrasion, your skin may appear slightly pink for 24-to-48 hours.  Your Facial Surgery Center staff member will advise you of proper care for your particular skin type.  The most important aftercare concern is to keep your skin clean with a mild skin cleanser and gentle washing to to maintain hydration of the skin with a moisturizer.  You may use cool compresses for comfort, if needed. It is important to avoid any sun exposure.  Sunscreen of a least 20 SPF must be used for skin protection.
